Dibrugarh University Shocker: Student jumps from hostel building to ‘Escape Ragging’

In a horrific incident reported from Dibrugarh University, Anand Sharma, MCom first semester student of Dibrugarh University jumped from the two storied hostel building to ‘escape ragging’. Anand is in a critical condition and is admitted in ICU.

Anand is a resident of Padma Nath Gohain Baruah Chatra Nivas (PNGBCN) hostel of the University.

Apparently, Anand did complain to the University authorities regarding his sufferings due to ragging by some students. It is learnt that he gave written complaint to the Warden of ‘C’ block of the hostel on 17th November, 2022 mentioning names of 10 students.

‘They beat him whole night’: Anand’s Mother

Anand’s mother narrated how her son was tortured day in and day out. She said that Anand was beaten all night. His face, ears were swollen up. “Where was the guard or the warden when my son was beaten up the whole night? We are vegetarian. My son was made to serve these boys non-vegetarian food. My son complained at least twice to the warden. Why did he not act?, Anand’s mother almost breaking down.

Anand’s mother has lodged a FIR at Dibrugarh Police station regarding the incident. She has accused five students, four from the University and one ex-student of ragging and torturing her son mentally and physically. She has also accused them of attempting to kill him.

She has mentioned in her complaint that the accused took away his money and his mobile phone, clicked objectionable photographs by putting alcohol and weed in his hand trying to show him as a drug addict.  She claimed that the students clicked these pictures to save themselves.

The five students against whom the FIR has been lodged are — Rahul Chetry (ex-student), Dibyajyoti Gogoi (3rd Semester, Dept of Applied Geology), Subrajyoti Baruah (3rd Semester, Dept of Pol. Sc.),  Niranjan Thakur (3rd Semester, Centre for Physical Education), Kalyan Dutta (3rd Semester, Dept of History) and several others of P.N.G.B. hostel of Dibrugarh University.

“We are enquiring the matter and are going to take strict action against the culprits” – said Dr Jiten Hazarika, Vice Chancellor, Dibrugarh University.

Assam CM Urges Students to Say NO to Ragging

Meanwhile, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken note of the incident. in a tweet the CM wrote, “It has come to notice that a Dibrugarh University student is hurt in an alleged case of ragging. Close watch maintained & followup action coordinated with district admn. Efforts on to nab the accused, victim being provided medical care.

Appeal to students, say NO to Ragging.”

Ragging Not New in DU

This is not the first time a case of ragging has been reported from Dibrugarh University. In March 2022, two students – Rituparna Das, a 5th semester student of department of Mechanical Engineering, and Kingku Saikia, another 5th semester student of department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of the Dibrugarh University Institute of Engineering and Technology (DUIET) were rusticated for ragging juniors.
