Massive fuel crisis looms large across the region as indefinite strike by oil tankers enters its second day today.

The strike has been called by the Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union for the state government’s failure in uprooting an illegal syndicate at the Golai IOCL terminal based at Digboi in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The Union alleges that the huge amounts of money are extorted forcibly from each oil tanker per day by oil mafia under the banner of the Golai Association at Digboi terminal of the IOCL.

The APMU has demanded construction of a terminal gate and deployment of adequate numbers of CISF personnel at the entrance of the terminal.

After the indefinite strike got underway on Monday, tankers have stopped loading from the IOCL terminals at Golai, Betkuchi, Noonmati, Lumding, Misamari, Ramnagar and Bongaigaon.

It is worth mentioning here that around 100 to 120 tankers carry finish products like petrol and high speed diesel to fuel outlets in Assam and across the region from the Golai IOCL terminal.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the Golai Association, S Doimary denies allegation of the existence of an oil syndicate at the Golai IOCL terminal in eastern Assam’s Digboi.
