The steep inflation rates in Manipur and neighbouring states come at a time when India’s overall inflation rate has shown a declining trend.

Manipur, grappling with an ethnic crisis for the past 19 months, has topped the list with the highest retail inflation rate at 10.12% in November, according to the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation’s latest report. The state’s inflation rate is significantly higher than the national average of 5.48%.

Chhattisgarh recorded the second-highest inflation at 8.39%, followed by Bihar with 7.55%. In stark contrast, Delhi reported the lowest inflation rate in the country at 2.65%.

Manipur had previously topped the inflation chart in July with a record 10.57%. Although the rate dipped in subsequent months, it remained alarmingly high, registering 9.69% in October before surging again in November.

Northeast Inflation Trends
In the north eastern region, Arunachal Pradesh followed Manipur with an inflation rate of 6.42%, while Tripura secured third place with 5.58%. Other north eastern states recorded the following inflation rates:

Assam: 5.17%
Nagaland: 4.99%
Meghalaya: 4.44%
Mizoram: 4.05%
Sikkim: 3.88% (lowest in the region)

The steep inflation rates in Manipur and neighbouring states come at a time when India’s overall inflation rate has shown a declining trend, dropping from 6.21% in October to 5.48% in November.

Experts suggest that prolonged unrest, disrupted supply chains, and economic instability could be contributing to Manipur’s persistently high inflation rates.
