With two days to go for the bypolls in South Tura and Ranikor, leaders of various political parties are rushing in to garner support for their respective candidates.

The centre of attraction will be South Tura from where Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is contesting. Apart from NPP leaders from the state, party leaders from Manipur were also rushed in to campaign for the chief minister in the constituency for the crucial by-poll.

Meanwhile, in Ranikor, a lot is at stake for the NPP and Congress as whichever wins the seat will emerge single largest in the state.

In Ranikor former Congress legislator Martin Danggo is contesting on an NPP ticket where UDP’s Pius Marwein and PDF’s PN Syiem are expected to be his main rivals.

Talking to Northeast Live, NPP legislator and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the party was confident of winning both South Tura and Ranikor.

Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor said that preparations are on in full swing for the by-polls scheduled for August 23 at Ranikor and South Tura. Today is the last day of campaigning which will end at 5 in the evening.

Speaking on the matter, Kharkongor said that steps are being taken to ensure that rules are not flouted by any candidate.

He said that things are moving in the right direction currently and also added here that four companies of Central Reserve Police Force have been deployed in both the constituencies apart from the state police to tackle the security.
