World record holder and eight-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt has tested positive for COVID-19 and is self-isolating at his home in Jamaica.
Bolt said he took a COVID-19 test on Saturday and the results came out positive. He also added that he is asymptomatic and has been advised home quarantine.
The Jamaican sprinter’s result comes days after he celebrated his 34th birthday. Bolt had reportedly arranged for a birthday bash wherein no social distancing guidelines were followed.
Jamaica’s Health Ministry confirmed late on Monday (Aug 24) that Bolt, who holds world records in the 100m and 200m, had tested positive after he posted a video on social media around midday saying he was waiting to receive his results.
Bolt said in a video shared on social media, “Good morning everybody I’m confirmed of Covid-19. I did a test on Saturday,” I am trying to be responsible so I’m going to stay in, and stay away from my friends. And also, I am having no symptoms, so I am going to quarantine myself. And will wait and see what is the protocol and how should I go about quarantining myself, from the Ministry of Health.”
Meanwhile, fans wished Bolt a speedy recovery on social media, while some accused him of carelessness.
