The arrests took place after a group of vigilant local youths became suspicious of an auto-rickshaw carrying the Bangladeshi nationals.
As many as six Bangladeshi infiltrators were arrested by police in Khowai district of Tripura while attempting to board a train to leave the state.
The incident took a sensational turn as locals alleged that certain BSF personnel had facilitated their illegal entry in exchange for Rs 70,000. However, the police have refuted the claim, asserting that the BSF actually assisted in detaining the infiltrators.
The arrests took place after a group of vigilant local youths became suspicious of an auto-rickshaw carrying the Bangladeshi nationals. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled, but they managed to detain one BSF jawan who was allegedly involved. As a crowd gathered, Teliamura police arrived at the scene and confirmed that the detained individuals were indeed Bangladeshi nationals.
Rajib Debnath, Officer-in-Charge of Teliamura Police Station, stated, “We received information around 5:00 to 5:30 AM about Bangladeshi nationals moving suspiciously in the Chailtabari area towards the railway station. Upon investigation, we found six individuals—one male, three adult females, and two minors. All have been detained and will be produced in court.”
Regarding allegations of BSF personnel accepting bribes to facilitate the infiltration, Debnath dismissed them as rumors, stating that BSF had, in fact, played a role in detaining the illegal entrants.
The arrested Bangladeshi nationals have been identified as Rezaul Sheikh, Sukhi Begum, Nasir Begum, Sarbia Begum, Laboni Akter, and a child named Abba Bakkar Siddiqui. The case has raised concerns over border security and the role of security personnel, with authorities expected to conduct further investigations.
