Nahid Afrin, a singer from Assam, joined the likes of popular Bollywood actress, Kareena Kapoor Khan and three others who were named as Ambassadors by UNICEF.
UNICEF India on Saturday announced Kareena Kapoor Khan as its new National Ambassador. Besides Kareena, UNICEF India has also appointed its first-ever Youth Advocates, who are peer leaders and champions on issues like climate action, mental health, innovations and Girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), a UNICEF statement said.
Besides Nahid, the other three UNICEF Youth Advocates are Gauranshi Sharma from Madhya Pradesh who is championing the cause of right to play and disability inclusion, Kartik Verma from Uttar Pradesh who is working on climate action and child rights advocacy and Vinisha Umashankar from Tamil Nadu who is a budding innovator and STEM pioneer.
Nahid first shot to fame when she became the second runner up in the 2015 edition of Indian Idol Junior and her talent as a singer was recognised.
In 2016, she made her debut as a playback singer in Bollywood with the film Akira starring Sonakshi Sinha in the lead role. She did the playback for Sonakshi for the song ‘Raj Raj Ke’.
Just a year later, in 2017, a fatwa was issued against Nahid directing her to stay from a musical programme claiming the event was “against Sharia”.
