Sikkim continues to grapple with a disturbing rise in suicide cases, as two more tragic incidents have been reported from Pakshep in Mangan and Srinagi in Dentam. These latest deaths, a 25-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl mark the 22nd suicide case in the state within just 15 days.
On February 24, a 25-year-old man was found dead in a greenhouse below his residence in Srinagi, Dentam.
His father reported the incident to the police at around 8:40 am. An inquest was conducted under the supervision of BDO Dentam, with the presence of the victim’s family, independent witnesses, and the panchayat.
Following a medico-legal autopsy at the District Hospital Gyalshing, the body was handed over to the family. Authorities have not found any signs of foul play, though investigations are ongoing.
In yet another tragic case, a 13-year-old girl reportedly died by suicide in Pakshep, Mangan. Police have launched an investigation and, so far, have found no evidence of foul play.
The severe surge in suicides across Sikkim has raised alarm among residents and authorities alike. Concerned citizens and mental health professionals are urging immediate intervention to address the crisis.
Earlier, Sikkim Health and Family Welfare Minister G T Dhungel has emphasised the need for mental health awareness and support. He has encouraged those experiencing stress or anxiety to seek professional help and reach out to trained counsellors.
For those in distress, the Minister has shared the toll-free 24×7 mental health support numbers: 14416 and 1-800-891-4416 of MANAS. Experts stress that timely intervention, awareness, and community support are crucial in preventing further tragedies.
