Sikkim Restores Road Link in Mangan District, Begins Evacuation of Stranded Tourists Amid Ongoing Search for Missing

The department confirmed that the evacuation of stranded tourists has already commenced.
With the monsoon season approaching and heavy rainfall expected to trigger landslides and road blockages across the region, the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department of Sikkim has issued an advisory for tourists to remain alert and plan their journeys carefully.
In a significant development, the Chungthang–Phidang road in Mangan district, one of the lifelines to several remote tourist destinations, has been restored. The department confirmed that the evacuation of stranded tourists has already commenced.
In an official press release, the department stated, “We advise all tourists to exercise caution while travelling and to plan their trips based on the latest road and weather updates from official sources. Your safety remains our utmost priority. In the event of road blockages or any unforeseen circumstances, necessary relief and evacuation support will be promptly provided to the stranded tourists.”
“With the continuous pursuance of the North District administration, especially the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, the Chungthang–Phidang road in Mangan District has now been restored and the safe evacuation of stranded tourists has commenced from today,” the release added.
Meanwhile, the search and rescue operation for the nine individuals, including a driver, who went missing after a tragic vehicle accident in Mangan District on May 29, is still underway. The multi-agency operation is being carried out under the close supervision of the District Police and Administration, with active involvement from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Indian Army, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF), fire and medical teams, Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS), Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure and Eco-tourism (IHCAE) Chemchey, Driver Association, and several local volunteers.
The department also informed that the two tourists who were rescued from the accident site and were receiving treatment at STNM Hospital, Gangtok, are now in stable condition and recovering well.
