Sikkim MP D.T. Lepcha Urges Government to Include Lepcha, Bhutia, and Limbu in Eighth Schedule of Constitution
Rajya Sabha MP from Sikkim, D.T. Lepcha today addressing the Parliament urged the Government to include Lepcha, Bhutia, and Limbu languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. He emphasized the cultural and historical significance of these languages and their deep-rooted connection to the identity of Sikkimese communities. Highlighting Sikkim’s linguistic progress, MP Lepcha recalled that the Sikkim Official Language Act, 1977, had granted official status to Nepali, Bhutia, and Lepcha, with Limbu added later in 1981 through an amendment. Over the years, these languages have been introduced in school curriculums, postgraduate studies, and Ph.D. programs at Sikkim Central University.
