The Sikkim Mandarin Orange, the Himalaya state’s most important commercial fruit, has been hard hit this season after an unknown disease destroyed the harvest, causing farmers to suffer heavy losses.
In view of the disease outbreak, CP Dhakal, a retired State Information Commissioner who is now a Progressive farmer, stated that oranges fell from the trees just as farmers were preparing to harvest this winter cash crop due to an unknown disease.

CP Dhakal also urged the state government to conduct research to protect the Sikkim Mandarin orange.
It may be mentioned here that Sikkim Mandarin Oranges are widely popular in the markets of Kolkata as well as abroad. But due to some unknown disease the production of the Orange has decreased in Sikkim over the years.
