Minister noted that the region's residents now have better access to essential treatments that were previously only available in major cities
Sikkim’s Health Minister GT Dhungel said the state’s growing role as a vital medical hub for cardiology, serving patients from Sikkim, North Bengal, and the broader Northeast.
During his visit to the Electrophysiological Studies and Radiofrequency Ablation Operative Cardiology Camp at STNM Hospital, he noted that the region’s residents now have better access to essential treatments that were previously only available in major cities.
The two-day camp, held from October 26-27, focuses on treating arrhythmias a severe heart condition causing abnormal rhythms that can lead to fainting, heart failure, or even sudden death. The camp offers Electrophysiological Studies and Radiofrequency Ablation procedures, rare in the region and typically requiring costly travel to metropolitan hospitals.
With the support of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and Health Minister Dhungel, STNM Hospital’s Cardiology Department has emerged as a center for these life-saving treatments. Leading the camp is Dr. Avinash Verma, Senior Consultant Cardiac-Electrophysiologist from BLK-MAX Super Speciality Hospital, Delhi, who has completed over 100 procedures across seven successful camps in Sikkim. This year, 25 patients are scheduled for treatment at no cost.
