Sikkim: HSP supports inclusion of Lepcha language 8th Schedule

Bhaichung Bhutia-led Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) today extended its full support to the long-pending demand for the inclusion of Lepcha language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

“As the Hamro Sikkim Party, we firmly stand by the principle that all the languages used in Sikkim, representing each community, should be accorded the honor of being included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This recognition is not only a matter of pride but also a crucial step in safeguarding the cultural identity of our state,” said HSP in a statement.

The 8th Schedule lists the 22 official languages of India. The Lepcha language is spoken by over 100,000 people in Sikkim, parts of West Bengal including Darjeeling and even the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has listed the Lepcha language as an endangered language. It is a unique and endangered language that deserves to be protected and promoted.

“The land of rich cultural diversity and linguistic heritage, prides itself on its numerous languages, each representing the unique identity of its communities, so it believes that every language spoken by the diverse communities of Sikkim deserves the utmost respect and recognition,” said HSP.

HSP further said that scheduled to be discussed in the ongoing monsoon session of the Parliament, the “Inclusion of Lepcha Language in 8th Schedule Bill” presents a moment of pride for every Sikkimese.

HSP urged all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs from Sikkim to extend their support to Bill.

It also urged the state government to pass a resolution wholeheartedly endorsing the “Inclusion of Lepcha Language in 8th Schedule Bill” and promptly convey its support to the central government.

Inclusion of the language in the 8th Schedule is a long pending demand of the Lepchas residing in Sikkim and parts of Bengal.
