Sikkim Hoteliers Urge Postponement of Sevoke-Rangpo Road Repairs to Save Tourist Season

The association expressed serious concerns about the negative impact the roadwork could have on Sikkim’s tourism industry.

The Sikkim Hotel & Restaurant Association (SHRA) has appealed to the authorities to postpone the proposed road repairs between Sevoke and Rangpo until the end of the peak tourist season or to carry out the work during night hours. The association expressed serious concerns about the negative impact the roadwork could have on Sikkim’s tourism industry.

SHRA executive members met the District Collector of East Sikkim and submitted a memorandum requesting a delay in the repair work on National Highway 10. They warned that the current timing of the road repairs would result in heavy losses for hotels, restaurants, and other tourism stakeholders due to trip cancellations and disruptions.

The association clarified that while it appreciates the efforts of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to repair NH-10, the timing of the work is problematic. “The road repairs should have been done before the tourist season began, not during the busiest time of the year,” the SHRA members stated.

The District Collector of East Sikkim assured the delegation that he would speak with the District Collector of Kalimpong and the General Manager of NHIDCL regarding the matter.

The SHRA also announced that it would soon meet the Governor of Sikkim and the Chief Secretary to press for immediate action in the interest of the tourism industry and its many stakeholders.
