Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang presented a comprehensive plan to bolster growth and economic development in the state and sought budgetary assistance from the Union Finance Ministry in Budget 2023-24 at his meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi today.
The meeting was part of the pre-Budget meeting chaired by Finance Minister Sitharaman.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister provided comprehensive detail about the changing orientation of Sikkim’s economy, the growth trajectory, and the fiscal and institutional interventions required to sustain the relatively higher growth rate. He also highlighted the national-level achievements of Sikkim and demonstrated critical variables like the Sustainable Development Goals, environmental and energy security, structural change, and service sector-led new employment opportunities. To make the state economically self-reliant, dynamic, competitive, and resilient, the Chief Minister requested a range of fiscal, financial, institutional, and policy interventions from the Ministry of Finance and other ministries of the Government of India.
The Union Finance Minister acknowledged the suggestions of the state government and assured that she will try to accommodate the state issues in Budget 2023-24 to the best of her capabilities.
The Chief Minister, expressed his gratitude to the Union Finance Minister for providing the platform for representatives from states and the union territories to participate and submit their respective proposals and suggestions for Budget 2023-24.
