The CM emphasized the need for Rs. 3,673 crore for comprehensive recovery and reconstruction of Sikkim after the GLOF floods and landslides devastation
Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang-Golay today highlighted the severe impact of the South Lhonak Lake outburst on October 4 last year which caused massive flooding and destruction of the Chungthang Dam, rendering the Teesta III Hydro Power Project defunct.
This disaster resulted in a loss of nearly Rs. 14,000 crore in assets and an annual revenue loss of Rs. 300-400 crore. He requested an annual grant in lieu of the 12% free power from the project for ten years or until reconstruction is complete, the CM said during his address at the 9th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog today, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of NH10, the sole lifeline connecting Sikkim to the rest of the country, and urged the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to prioritize its restoration and modernization. He also proposed the establishment of a Multi-modal Corridor with a modern integrated check post between Sikkim and Eastern Nepal through Chewa Bhanjyang to enhance cultural and economic ties and support national security interests.
Focusing on Sikkim’s developmental goals with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, he highlighted four major pillars: economic growth, environmental sustainability, human resource development, and good governance. He also identified five crucial areas for accelerating economic growth: improving youth employability, developing Sikkim as a healthcare and wellness hub, implementing innovative practices in agriculture and food processing, promoting tourism and MSME sectors, and enhancing civic amenities and infrastructure.
Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister for prompt financial assistance from the NDRFund, he emphasized the need for Rs. 3,673 crore for comprehensive recovery and reconstruction as determined by the Post Disaster Needs Assessment. Additionally, he requested a special grant to expedite the restoration of critical infrastructure and livelihood support initiatives.
