The political atmosphere in Sikkim is abuzz as candidates from the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) have officially filed their nominations for the upcoming by-elections to be held on November 13.
Following the party’s announcement of candidates for the Soreng-Chakung and Namchi-Singithang constituencies, Aditya Golay and Satish Chandra Rai submitted their nominations in Soreng and Namchi, respectively.
Aditya Golay, 34, son of SKM Supremo and Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang will contest from the Soreng-Chakung seat. This will be the second time that Golay will be contesting from this seat. He had won the seat in 2019 with 6,580 votes defeating SDF’s Sancha Raj Subba who polled 6,372 votes. But Aditya did not contest the Assembly elections this year as his father contested from the seat and won with 10,480 votes.
Satish Chandra Rai, a seasoned politician and former Chairman of the Skill Development Department, will contest from the Namchi-Singhithang.
He contested the Lok Sabha elections of 1999 as a Sikkim Sangram Parishad candidate but lost. After that he joined Sikkim Democratic Front and in 2019 he joined SKM.
In the Assembly elections held this year, the Namchi- Shigithang seat was won by Krishna Kumari Rai, wife of CM Tamang. She polled 7,907 votes and defeated Bimal Rai of SDF with a margin of 5302 votes.
The last date for filing of nominations is October 25 and the last date for withdrawal is October 30. The papers will be scrutinised on October 28.
By-elections for both the seats will be held on November 13 and results will be declared on November 23.
