Sikkim: Big boost to SDF, over 1500 join party ahead of Assembly polls

Big names like Bhaichung Bhutia had announced that he would be joining SDF soon and merge his party HSP with SDF
Ahead of the Assembly elections, Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) got a shot in the arm as over 1500 people, including several prominent leaders, academicians and retired government official joined the party today.
Prominent individuals who joined the party today include, Ashish Rai, a youth leader who had contested the 2019 elections, Former Sikkim Krantikari Morcha working president Nabin Karki, Dr CB Chettri, Deputy Registrar of Sikkim University, DK Bhandari, Former Horticulture Secretary of Sikkim, ST Tamang, Former Special Secretary to the Government and Leader of Tamang Community, Youth leader Yojna Rai and General Secretary of BJP IT Cell, IK Rasaily.
The new members were welcomed to the SDF by party President and former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling.
The party had organised a massive joining programme at the party headquarters in Gangtok.
Football legend and politician Bhaichung Bhutia is all set to join the SDF party soon. Last week, Bhaichung made the formal announcement, ending a week-long speculation of him joining Sikkim’s opposition party.
Bhaichung who was serving as the working president of the Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP), served as the face of the party since 2018, unsuccessfully contesting the 2019 elections.
He is all set to merge his party with SDF. He said, “There are still some leaders to meet and the merger of two parties will not happen immediately, it will take time. I have not fixed a date to join SDF or merge yet, that will happen after thorough discussion”.
