Sikkim Chief Prem Singh Tamang on Wednesday convened a meeting at his official residence with officials of the Health, RDD and PHE departments to address potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as jaundice and Hepatitis A+ during the monsoon season.
During the meeting, CM Tamang highlighted the importance of spreading awareness through Information Education Communication programs.
Tamang said, “These initiatives will be carried out extensively in rural and urban areas, with active participation from the Education Department.”
He further that the programs aim to educate the public about bacteriological contamination, various waterborne diseases, and health risks, and promote safe hygiene practices, sanitation facilities, and proper waste management.
Clear directives were given to PHE and RDD departments to ensure regular treatment of all water sources, rigorous surveillance, and prompt response to reports of waterborne diseases.
He also emphasized to enforce effective waste management practices, specifically to prevent littering in water bodies like ‘jhoras’ and other sources.
