Sexual Harassment at NIT Jote Sparks Protests; Students Demand Action and Transparency

As concerns grew, the administration set up an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) to investigate the case.
Arunachal Pradesh’s National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jote is witnessing intense student protests following an incident of sexual harassment involving a fourth-year female student.
On October 26, the student was reportedly harassed by a male classmate, leading to the expulsion of the accused. However, the absence of a formal FIR has created widespread discontent among students.
Classes have been suspended since the incident, with students expressing anger over the administration’s inadequate response and the absence of faculty support during this crisis. The student body has demanded the immediate resumption of classes, stating that NIT Jote’s inaction forced the victim’s family to file an FIR against the accused.
Initially, NIT officials advised against involving the police, assuring that they would handle the matter internally. As concerns grew, the administration set up an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) to investigate the case. However, students claim that no concrete steps have been taken, prompting large-scale protests on the campus.
The situation underscores a wider issue of safety, accountability, and student welfare within the institution. Protesters are calling for NIT Jote to be more transparent, ensure thorough investigations, and implement stronger safety measures to protect students and support victims of harassment.
