Severe hailstorm and thunderstorms which lashed through several parts of Assam last night have left at least four persons dead and a trail of devastation and destruction.
Of the four casualties, two people died in Dumduma, one person died in Badalbeta and another person identified as Subedi Satya of Rukang Bagan of Namrup die after his bike hit an uprooted tree in Namrup Nigam Tinali.
Electrical poles, trees have been uprooted, power supply in many areas continued to be disrupted, roofs blown off and houses ravaged and damaged. Roads remain blocked due to uprooted trees and electrical poles lying across the roads. Crops have been damaged and poultry and livestock left dead.
The worst affected areas in last night’s storm have been Tinsukia, Namrup, Haflong.
Several schools and college buildings too bore the brunt of the storms. The Tinsukia district administration and the District Disaster Management Authority decided to keep all schools and colleges of Tinsukia shut today to ensure the safety and security of the students, the authorities said in an official statement.
Over 250 houses have been damaged in Tinsukia and Haflong, people have been forced to spend the night under the open sky.
Atleast 150 houses in Ardha, Prabdisa, Wasibil, Langri 1 and 2, Hajawari, Phonglodisa, Jamponglangso and several other villages of Diyungbra in Haflong have been severely damaged by hailstorm that hit the areas on Saturday night.
Several horticulture and agricultural crops have been destroyed while many poultry and livestock are reported dead due to the hailstorm.
NCHAC CEM Debolal Gorlosa visited the affected families and distributed plastic tarpaulin. Speaking to media persons CEM Gorlosa said that the affected houses will be provided with material like tin sheets and other necessary equiptment.
