Students currently in Class X will be allowed to complete their studies in 2025, but no new admissions for Class IX will be granted.
In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Government of Sikkim has initiated a major restructuring of its school education system to improve resource efficiency and academic quality.
As part of these changes, several junior high schools have been downgraded to primary schools, multiple secondary schools have been restructured as junior high schools, and the Commerce stream has been discontinued in several senior secondary schools due to low student enrollment.
From the academic session 2025, classes for grades VI to VIII will be discontinued in several junior high schools, which will now function only as primary schools. These schools have been merged with nearby institutions.
In Gangtok district, Patuk Chandey JHS has been merged with Makha SSS, while Chuba JHS has been merged with Biraspati Parsai SSS in Ranipool. In Gyalshing, Agri Naya Busty JHS has been merged with Mukrong SS/Uttarey SSS. Additionally, from the academic session 2026, the Commerce stream will no longer be offered in several senior secondary schools across the state. Students currently enrolled in Class XII Commerce will be allowed to complete their studies in 2025, but no new admissions for Class XI Commerce will be granted.
The affected schools in Gangtok district include Dikchu SSS and Makha SSS, while in Pakyong, Assam Lingzey SSS will also see the discontinuation of Commerce. In Soreng district, Commerce will no longer be available in Buriakhop SSS, K.B. Limbo SSS (Sribadam), and Manglabaria SSS.
