Senior Sikkim politician and former spokesperson of Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) Biraj Adhikari has passed away at Central Referral Hospital (Manipal) on Thursday. He was 63.
As per inputs, he was admitted in the hospital since February.
CM has expressed grief over the demise of the former leader of HSP. In a condolence message, CM said “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Biraj Adhikari this morning at Central Referral Hospital-SMIMS, Tadong after a prolonged illness.”
“As a stalwart and a respected figure in Sikkim’s political landscape, Shri Adhikari’s legacy is defined by his unwavering dedication to public service, commitment to the welfare of the people, and tireless efforts for the people and the state. His demise leaves a significant void in the state’s political sphere and beyond”, CM added.
“In this moment of grief, my heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. I pray for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace”, he further added.
Biraj Adhikari had resigned from active politics due to health reasons.
Biraj Adhikari was the general secretary of the Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC). The Sikkim branch of the Indian National Congress (INC)) which was led by Nar Bahadur Bhandari. In 2004, as the candidate of the INC, Adhikari contested the sole Lok Sabha seat from Sikkim but lost to the SDF candidate.
