The irony is that the film with the same name – Semkhor, based on the life and ways of the people in the village won the Special Jury Mention award

Semkhor village of Dima Hasao, said to be over 400 years old, is crying for development. Even after 400 years, the village, with a population of 431 (as per the 2011 Census) has no access to good roads, electricity, clean water and proper education.

The irony is that the film with the same name – Semkhor, based on the life and ways of the people of the village won the Special Jury Mention award in the 68th National Film Awards, but the village with a population of about 431 (as per the 2011 Census) is devoid of any development and without any basic amenities.

Interesting to note that Semkhor is one of the constituencies of the NC Hills Autonomous Council and elections for the 12th Council is slated to be held on January 8 next year.

According to locals, there has been no development in the area over the years. Whatever little development has taken place is because of the efforts of individuals with entrepreneurial bent of mind.

One of the residents of the area, speaking to media, said, “There has been no development in the area for the last 15 years, the situation back then and the situation now is exactly the same. Even though it is winter season we still have to pull our cars as they are unable to run on the roads because of the bad condition”.
