Back in September 2013, Controversial Godman ‘Asaram’ was arrested for sexually assaulting a juvenile in his Jodhpur Ashram. On August 13, 2013, Asaram sexually assaulted a 16 year old from Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur and exactly a week later, on August 20, the girl in question along with her family lodged a complaint against him.
After his arrest on September 1,2013, Asaram has been residing in Jodhpur central jail.
Today, the self styled godman was convicted by a Jodhpur court sentencing him to life imprisonment. The judgement was pronounced by Justice Madhu Sudan Sharma in the Jodhpur Central Jail itself.
Asaram has been booked under Section 342, 376, 354 A, 506, 509/34 of the IPC, Sections 23, 26 of the Juvenile Justice Act and Section 8 of the POCSO Act. Security around the Jodhpur jail premises had been heightened since Wednesday morning.
The Centre also asked Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana governments to tighten security and deploy additional forces as the three states have a large number of followers of Asaram.
