Security Beefed Up at Agartala-Akhaura ICP Amid ‘Agartala Cholo’ Rally by Bangladeshi Protesters

The measures come as Bangladeshi protestors prepare to stage the ‘Agartala Cholo’ rally near the international border.
Amid escalating tensions between India and Bangladesh, authorities have significantly tightened security at the Agartala-Akhaura Integrated Check Post (ICP) in Agartala, Tripura. The measures come as Bangladeshi protestors prepare to stage the ‘Agartala Cholo’ rally near the international border.
The rally, reportedly aimed at protesting cross-border provocations, has prompted large-scale deployment of security personnel, including the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Border Security Force (BSF), to prevent any attempts by protestors to cross into Indian territory.
This heightened security follows a recent incident involving a breach of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission office in Agartala. The breach occurred during a demonstration by Hindu protestors who were rallying against increasing atrocities on minorities in Bangladesh and calling for the release of ISKCON preacher Chinmoy Krishna Das. The incident has intensified scrutiny of security protocols in the region and has drawn concern from authorities on both sides of the border.
Dr. Kiran Kumar, Superintendent of Police for West Tripura District, commented on the situation, stating, “To avoid any escalation, we have deployed additional forces near the ICP. Officials are closely monitoring the developments and are prepared to handle any untoward incidents. Security measures have been further heightened due to the forthcoming NEC meeting in the region.”
He assured that steps are being taken to ensure no protestor from Bangladesh crosses into Indian territory. “Forces have been placed on high alert, and the situation is being closely observed,” Dr. Kumar added.
The ‘Agartala Cholo’ rally is reportedly a response to growing tensions over religious and social issues in Bangladesh. Bangladeshi protestors have accused India of cross-border provocations, which they intend to highlight during their demonstration. The situation has raised fears of further unrest, especially after the recent breach at the Assistant High Commission office.
The Agartala-Akhaura ICP, a vital hub for trade and transit between India and Bangladesh, has been a site of protests in the past, making it a sensitive area for law enforcement agencies. Authorities have also urged residents in border areas to remain calm and refrain from spreading misinformation, which could worsen the already fragile situation.
With security forces maintaining a strict vigil, officials are working to ensure the region does not become a flashpoint for cross-border tensions.
