SDF Strongly Condemns Ascent of Mount Khangchendzonga, Criticises SKM Govt for Allowing It

Criticising the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government, SDF questioned how such an expedition was allowed and who authorised it.
The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has issued a strong condemnation over the recent ascent of Mount Khangchendzonga, calling the May 18 expedition a direct assault on the religious and cultural sentiments of the Sikkimese people.
The party stressed that Khangchendzonga is not merely a mountain but the sacred guardian deity of Sikkim, revered deeply by the Bhutia, Lepcha, and all communities of the state. SDF Spokesperson Rikzing Norbu Dorjee Bhutia reminded that the SDF government had banned all expeditions to the peak in 2001 out of profound respect for its spiritual significance.
Criticising the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government, SDF questioned how such an expedition was allowed and who authorised it. The party expressed dismay at the SKM’s silence and demanded an immediate public clarification.
SDF stated, “This is not just a mountain, it is the sacred guardian deity of Sikkim and a spiritual symbol for the Bhutia, Lepcha and all Sikkimese people. This act is a direct assault on our religious sentiments and cultural identity. The SDF government had banned all expeditions to Khangchendzonga in 2001 to protect its sanctity. That ban was rooted in deep respect for Sikkim’s traditions.
We are shocked by the silence of the SKM government. Why was this allowed? Who gave permission? Why has the government not spoken up?”
In a firm statement, SDF laid out its demands:
- A formal protest to be lodged with the Central Government.
- Full restoration of the 2001 ban on all activities on the sacred mountain.
- Clear accountability on who granted permission for the climb.
“Khangchendzonga is not for conquest. It is for worship. Any act of disrespect is an affront to the soul of Sikkim,” said Bhutia.
The incident has triggered a wave of condemnation across civil society, with multiple voices joining the SDF in expressing outrage. The climb was reportedly carried out by mountaineers from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports.
The SDF reaffirmed its commitment to defending the faith, identity, and cultural heritage of Sikkim, asserting that any erosion of its sacred traditions will not be tolerated.
