The Supreme Court today imposed restrictions on burning of firecrackers on Diwali.

A two-judge bench allowed burning of fire crackers only for two hours from 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali day while putting a ban on online sale of firecrackers.

The Court was hearing a petition filed by three children that called for countrywide ban on firecrackers citing its ill effects on environment and public health.

Firecracker manufacturers had earlier told the court that use of crackers should not be completely banned as it will cost thousands their livelihood and that crackers are not the sole reason for increase in air pollution.

The two-judge bench permitted the sale and manufacture of green crackers which have low emission rate.

Only those firecrackers that comply with permissible decibel sound limits will be permitted to be sold in the market.

The court has put a ban on stringed and joined firecrackers called Laddis. Only licensed traders will be allowed to sell firecrackers.
