The Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up Patanjali Ayurved, the company co-founded by yoga guru Ramdev for attacking allopathic medicines and running misleading advertisements claiming that its products can “cure” certain diseases. The apex court said that the company would have to pay a fine of Rs one crore for the same.
A bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Prashant Kumar Mishra which was hearing a petition filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) that referred to several advertisements which allegedly projected allopathy and the doctors practicing allopathy in poor light. The petition alleged that Patanjali criticised allopathy and made false claims about curing certain diseases.
The bench directed Patanjali Ayurved to stop publishing such misleading ads and refrain from making any silly remarks in the press against allopathy or doctors practicing allopathy.
The Supreme Court also asked that the Centre’s attorney to look for a solution for the misleading medical advertisements that claims that medications can provide 100% cure for specific diseases.
The next date of hearing of the IMA plea has been fixed for February 5 next year.
