Besides the Supreme Court has also directed the state government to file another affidavit seeking status of illegal foreigners in detention camps. The court has also asked the Chief Secretary to be present during the filing of the affidavit.

The apex court asked the Assam government to consult authorities and file an affidavit on or before April 23, giving details of “ways and means” for releasing illegal foreigners who are languishing in the state’s detention centres for nearly a decade.

Meanwhile, the state government informed the court that it is planning to set up 1000 more foreigners tribunal across the state at the expense of Rs 900 crore annually.

On the other hand the court has appointed senior advocate Gaurav Banerjee as Amicus Curie for identification and deportation of illegal migrants.
