Has the Saraighat Bridge over Brahmaputra river in Guwahati, Assam turned into a suicide point? Well even with strict security in place, there are frequent reports of youths attempting suicide by jumping off the bridge into the river.
Just two days after a youth who is suspected to have jumped into the river and died (body still not found), another youth today attempted to take his life by jumping into the Brahmaputra river from the bridge.
The victim has been identified as Hafizur Ahmed, a resident of Baihata Chariali.
When Hafizur was trying to jump from the bridge into the river this morning, locals present there tried to convince him not to commit suicide, but he did not listen to anyone and jumped into the river.
On being alerted by locals, a police team along with a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the scene and managed to save the youth alive by carrying out a search operation in the river. He was later taken to hospital for treatment.
Talking to media, Hafizur said that he is in love with a girl from his village and they both want to get married to each other. However, the girl’s family disagreed with their marriage, which is what led him to commit suicide.
It may be mentioned here that on Sunday, a youth from the Fatasil Ambari area of Guwahati went missing. It is feared that the person might have jumped into the Brahmaputra river because a pair of slippers along with the scooter which belonged to him, was recovered by the police from the point of the bridge where the missing youth is suspected to have jumped into the river.
The river police carried out search and rescue operations but were unable to trace the person.
Earlier in September, a lady police personnel posted at the Paltan Bazar Police Station in Guwahati had gone missing. It is suspected that she might have ended her life by jumping off the Saraighat Bridge into the Brahmaputra river.
In August, a youth identified as Khanjay Kumar Das, a resident of Metuakuchi went missing after he jumped into the river. In May, a man died by suicide by jumping off the bridge.
