Accused has been identified as Mohammad Sariful Islam Shehzad, suspected to be a Bangladeshi national who entered India illegally.
The accused arrested by the Mumbai police of stabbing Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan six times during a burglary attempt at his Bandra residence late Wednesday night has been identified as Mohammad Sariful Islam Shehzad, suspected to be a Bangladeshi national who entered India illegally.
Speaking to the media, Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam stated, “The investigation suggests the accused is likely from Bangladesh as he does not possess any Indian documents. We have added charges under the Passport Act against him.”
The accused, who allegedly changed his name to Bijoy Das, has been living in Mumbai for the past four months and was working at a housekeeping agency. Police arrested him in Thane and recovered items indicating his Bangladeshi origin.
The suspect reportedly entered the actor’s home through a fire exit at the back. Saif Ali Khan’s maid spotted the intruder and screamed, alerting the actor. When Khan confronted him, the attacker stabbed both the actor and his maid before fleeing the scene. Khan was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where doctors confirmed he is recovering well.
The police statement revealed that the attacker demanded money and turned violent when opposed. “The accused stabbed the actor and his maid, Junu, during the robbery attempt. He has been charged under sections for illegal entry into India,” the statement added.
The incident has sparked nationwide concern over safety in Mumbai, with questions raised about the city’s law and order situation. Members of the Opposition and the film fraternity have criticized the Devendra Fadnavis-led government for failing to ensure security, even for high-profile individuals.
In response, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended Mumbai’s reputation as a safe city, saying, “Mumbai is the safest among all megacities in India. While incidents like these are serious, it is incorrect to claim that Mumbai is unsafe based on one case. The government is committed to making the city even safer.”
The attack on the popular actor has shocked the nation and intensified discussions about the safety of citizens in India’s financial capital. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
