Sachin Tendulkar attends childhood coach Ramakant Achrekar’s funeral in Mumbai

Former India cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli attended their coach Ramakant Achrekar’s funeral in Mumbai on Thursday. Sachin Tendulkar was seen lending his shoulder to the bier of Achrekar.

Ramakant Achrekar, who coached Sachin Tendulkar in his formative years, died aged 86 due to prolonged illness at his Shivaji Park residence in Mumbai on Wednesday .

Achrekar played a key role in shaping up Tendulkar’s career over the years. He was a respected coach who trained young cricketers at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park in Dadar.

In 1990, Achrekar was honoured with the Dronacharya Award for Outstanding coaches in Sports and Games. He was honoured with one of the country’s highest civilian award, the Padma Shri in 2010.

In the same year, he was honoured the “Lifetime Achievement” award by the Sports Illustrated by Gary Kirsten.

Indian players on Thursday, wore black armbands at the fourth and final Test against Australia began at the Sydney Cricket Ground to pay respect to coach Ramakant Achrekar who died on Wednesday.

Board of Control for Cricket in India tweeted, ‘As a mark of respect to demise of Mr Ramakant Achrekar, the team is wearing black arm bands….’
