Row over Cheristerfield encounter rocks Meghalaya Assembly; Cong stages walkout

The row over Cheristerfield Thangkhiew encounter on Wednesday rocked the state Assembly with the Congress staging a walkout from the house.

Congress members staged a walkout from the State Legislative Assembly after the speaker refused to allow a short duration discussion on the demand for suspension of SPs for their alleged role in the Cheristerfield Thangkhiew encounter case.

Speaking to media persons after the walkout, Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma questioned as to why the government and the Chief Minister trying to protect the senior police officers. Mukul Sangma also said that the government’s attitude is hampering free and fair probe.

It may be mentioned that several groups including the Voice of the people of Mawlai have been demanding the suspension of East Jaintia Hills SP and Shillong City SP in connection with the Cheristerfield Thangkhiew encounter.

Meanwhile, the senior Congress leader also alleged that under the current situation, youth of the state are losing all hope and this in turn is creating a fertile ground for terror outfits to regroup.
