Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case: Wife Sonam Surrenders in UP

Sonam Raghuvanshi, the woman who went missing after the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, has surrendered before the police in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Sources said Sonam contacted her brother shortly before surrendering.
Taking to X, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma wrote, “Within 7 days, a major breakthrough has been achieved by the Meghalaya Police in the Raja murder case. Three assailants who are from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested, the female has surrendered, and operation is still on to catch one more assailant. Well done, Meghalaya Police.”

The case, which had sparked national attention and outrage, began when the couple from Madhya Pradesh went missing on May 23 while on a trip to Sohra (Cherrapunjee) in Meghalaya during their honeymoon. After days of search operations, police recovered Raja’s decomposed body on June 2. Police teams had even searched nearby areas for Sonam’s body, fearing she may have been harmed too. In a crucial lead, authorities found her raincoat lying near the spot where Raja’s body was recovered, intensifying suspicion.
Earlier in the investigation, a local tourist guide provided crucial information. He told the police that he had seen Raja and Sonam on the last day they were spotted, accompanied by three other men who were speaking in Hindi.
“The woman was walking behind while the four men walked ahead,” the guide recalled. “They were speaking in Hindi, but I couldn’t understand what they were saying because I only know Khasi and English.”
The shocking murder and Sonam’s sudden disappearance led to a wave of criticism against Meghalaya and the Northeast. However, the relentless action by the Meghalaya police and successive arrests have vindicated the state’s law enforcement efforts and the clean image of Meghalaya.
