District Magistrate Dharun Kumar issued an order strictly prohibiting the movement of all domesticated pets and dogs in and out of the village.

In response to a sudden spike in rabies cases, officials have declared New Zoveng village in Manipur’s Churachandpur district a containment zone. Authorities confirmed multiple cases of rabies both suspected and confirmed posing a serious threat to the health and safety of residents and animals in nearby areas.

District Magistrate Dharun Kumar issued an order strictly prohibiting the movement of all domesticated pets and dogs in and out of the village. He also directed the immediate identification and vaccination of all pet and stray dogs in the area to prevent further spread.

Officials will conduct door-to-door monitoring, surveillance, and health check-ups to assess the situation. The order also bans the sale and transport of domestic dogs during the containment period. Authorities warned that any violation of the order will invite strict penal action.

Amid rising concerns, the Director of Health Services, Chambo Gonmei, visited Churachandpur on Saturday to personally assess the situation. He attended a high-level meeting at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Mini Secretariat.

Deputy Commissioner Dharun Kumar chaired the meeting, which brought together key stakeholders including officials from the district administration, veterinary department, health department, and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). The meeting focused on ensuring smooth coordination among all departments to implement effective containment and preventive measures without delay.

Officials urged the public to remain alert and cooperate with health and veterinary teams working in the field to curb the spread of rabies in the district.
