PS Tamang Cabinet’s first decision: To announce ex-gratia for flood victims, DA/DR hiked by 4%

Within hours of taking oath yesterday as Sikkim’s Chief Minister for the second time in a row, Prem Singh Tamang got down straight to business. He chaired a Cabinet meeting and took some key decisions, including deciding to announce ex-gratia for families affected by the ongoing floods and landslides, and hiking Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for government employees and pensioners respectively by 4 per cent from 42% to 46%.
The ex-gratia amount which would be announced soon, would be as per the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) norms, officials said.
The Cabinet also decided to assist flood affected people to construct their houses under the Sikkim Gramin Awas Yojana scheme.
The Cabinet meeting began with a two-minute silence in memory of all those who lost their lives in the floods and landslides in Majhua village in Namchi District.
The Cabinet commended the swift response from departments, local administration, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), and individuals who helped in recovery, evacuation, and relief efforts.
Among the other decisions taken by the Cabinet at its meeting yesterday, was regarding the commencement of the 1st Assembly Session under the new government on June 12 for administering the oath of office and secrecy to the newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and election of the Speaker and directing relevant departments to conduct a comprehensive review of the state’s Own Tax and Non-Tax Revenue collection.
The cabinet also decided to improve the functioning of the Education Department by subdividing it into School Education and Higher Education, Technical and Medical Education.
