‘Profound Sense of Loss’: Northeast Mourns Death of Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of Roman Catholic Church

The death of Pope Francis has drawn deep sorrow not only across the world but also in Northeast India, where Chief Ministers and political leaders expressed grief over the loss. They offered condolences and prayers for the eternal peace of the beloved pontiff, remembering his legacy of compassion, humility, and service to humanity.
Pope Francis died Monday morning at the age of 88, leaving the world in mourning and grief. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, announced the Pope’s demise, stating, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.”
Taking to X, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma wrote, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis. As the Head of the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope led by example. He was truly a People’s Pope, and his life embodied humility, love, and compassion, which has inspired countless souls. His Papacy will be remembered and cherished as he advocated for peace across the world. I also recall with nostalgia the historic moment I met with the Pope at the Vatican in December 2022, where I requested him to pray for the state, the nation and its people. Today, we have lost the Shepherd of the Church, a Global Leader, and the People’s Pope. But his life will be an inspiration to all of us. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Mizoram CM Lalduhoma said, “I express my profound sorrow at the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. As a global symbol of humility, compassion, and moral leadership, his contributions to humanity will be remembered with deep reverence. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio said, “With a heavy heart, I join the world in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. A shepherd of peace, his humility, wisdom, and compassion transcended faiths. May his enduring legacy continue to inspire humanity, and may his soul rest in peace.”
Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang wrote, “Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. His profound wisdom,compassion, and relentless pursuit of peace and unity touched countless lives across the globe. He was not just a spiritual leader, but a beacon of hope and humility.
My heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Catholic community and to all those who found solace and inspiration in his words and actions. May his legacy continue to inspire love, faith, and humanity in the hearts of people everywhere. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju said,” A profound sense of loss today. The world bids farewell to His Holiness Pope Francis, a guiding light of compassion, humility & unwavering faith. His words healed hearts, his actions united humanity. Deeply saddened by his passing, may his legacy of love live on.”
Nagaland Deputy CM Yanthungo Patton wrote,”Mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a humble servant of God who walked in the footsteps of Christ with grace and conviction. In word and deed, he reflected the Gospel’s call to love the poor, forgive freely, and protect creation. His papacy was a light to many—a reminder that faith must be lived with compassion, that justice and mercy must guide our steps. He stood with the brokenhearted, spoke for the silenced, and led the faithful with the heart of a shepherd. May the Lord grant him eternal rest and may his memory continue to guide the Church in truth, service, and love.”
The pontiff had battled several health challenges in recent years, including a severe case of double pneumonia and ongoing knee pain, which had significantly impacted his mobility.
Despite these ailments, Pope Francis continued his papal duties until his final days, making a surprise public appearance on Easter Sunday, greeting thousands of pilgrims. His death marks the end of a papacy defined by compassion, reform, and efforts to modernize the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis, leader of 1.4 billion Catholics, was the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church. He became Pope in 2013 after his predecessor, Benedict XVI, resigned.
The Pope had suffered various ailments in his 12-year papacy. The last few months of his papacy had been marked by several hospital visits and concerns about his health.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, was the first pope from the Americas.
Elected pontiff at age 76, he moved quickly to make an impact. Over 12 years, he had reorganized the Vatican’s bureaucracy, written four major teaching documents, made 47 foreign trips to more than 65 countries, and created more than 900 saints.
Overall, Francis was widely seen as trying to open the staid global Church to the modern world.
Among major decisions, he had allowed priests to offer blessings to same-sex couples on a case-by-case basis and has appointed women to serve as leaders of Vatican offices for the first time.
