Prof. Upasana Mahanta from Assam Becomes First Indian To Be Appointed To Cambridge International’s Strategic Higher Education Advisory Council

Proud moment for Assam and India as Professor Dr. Upasana Mahanta from Assam has become the first Indian to be appointed to the Strategic Higher Education Advisory Council (SHEAC) formed by Cambridge International.
Hailing from Sivasagar, Dr. Mahanta, who currently serves as the Dean of Admissions and Outreach at O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) in Sonipat, Haryana, will now join a select panel of senior leaders from the world’s top academic institutions including the University of Oxford, MIT, University of Cambridge, University of Toronto, and Monash University.
The SHEAC plays a crucial role in guiding the future direction of Cambridge qualifications globally, ensuring their relevance and responsiveness to the evolving higher education landscape.
Dr. Mahanta’s appointment marks a significant acknowledgement of India’s rising leadership in global academic forums.
Her presence on SHEAC ensures that an Indian perspective representing the broader Global South is part of critical conversations shaping the future of higher education.

Speaking on her appointment, Professor Mahanta said that it was a great honour to join such a prestigious global council.
She emphasised the importance of representing not only her institution but also the voices of students and educators from India and the Global South, highlighting the need for diversity and global awareness in shaping the future of education.
Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu took to X to Congratulated Mahanta and wrote, “It’s truly heartening to see Professor Dr. Upasana Mahanta from Sivasagar becoming the first Indian to be appointed to the Strategic Higher Education Advisory Council (SHEAC) formed by Cambridge International. Her remarkable achievement is a proud moment not just for the academic community but for Assam and the entire nation.”
