According to police reports, the incident took place on October 21, and the college authorities lodged a police complaint on October 25.

After 18 first year students were suspended for their alleged involvement in a ragging case on October 21 at the Tripura Medical College, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma met Principal Dr Arindam Dutta and sought to understand the circumstances under which the students were found guilty.

The students accused of ragging have been suspended and collectively fined Rs 10 lakhs. The college’s decision to act firmly has sparked a significant public response, highlighting the administration’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all students.

Pradyot discussed the extent of the punishment imposed on the accused students with the principal.

According to police reports, the incident took place on October 21, and the college authorities lodged a police complaint on October 25. Chief Minister Manik Saha, a former professor and maxillo-facial surgeon at the same institution, responded strongly, assuring that strict action would be taken against anyone involved in ragging.

The Principal of the society-run Tripura Medical College Dr Arindam Datta had filed a FIR with the Amtoli police station against the students of the college on charges of ragging.

The eighteen students against whom the FIR was registered are 1) Barkha Debbarma , 2)Urvashi Debbarma, 3) VL Peksanga Sailo, 4) Renesha Debbarma, 5) Mellisa Jorinsangi Pachua, 6) Lima Debbarma, 7) Ayubir APCM Debbarma, 8) Langmaku Debbarma , 9) Koleb Malsum, 10) Tinni Debbarma, 11) Samplai Debbarma, 12) Sinai Debbarma, 13) Siddhartha Mog , 14) Urmila Tripura, 15) Pirma Debbarma, 16) Isha Debbarma, 17) Mishol Debbarma and 18) Saurav Debbarma.

In the letter of complaint to police principal Dr Datta said that he had received a complaint about ragging from a student named Roopesh Kumar Jha and launched an inquiry. But when the principal started querying students on the matter he was insulted and abused by two students named Ayubir Debbarma and Samplai Debbarma. A complaint in this regard has also reached the National Medical Commission (NMC)’s anti-ragging cell. He added that a number of students of first year have started indiscriminately ragging fellow-students .

After receiving the complaint the officer in charge of Amtoli police station Smriti Kanta Bardhan has issued notices to the guilty students for appearing in the police station , threatening arrest if they failed to appear.

Sources said that earlier incidents of ragging used to be reported from the erstwhile Tripura Engineering College (TEC) and Polytechnic College but TMC had always been more or less free from this scourge because of the strict rules framed by the government. This is the first time after many years that a major incident of ragging and insult to the Principal has come to the fore and matters have reached the police. It now remains to be seen how the issue is resolved.
