Police in Guwahati today fired upon notorious thieves, injuring them in the process.
One alleged thief identified as Abhijit Rabha was fired upon at Panikhaiti, while the other thief identified as Mahibul Hoq was fired upon at Birubari.
Both thieves are alleged to have been involved in several incidents of chain snatching and stealing mobile phones.
The police across the state got active against chain snatchers and thieves after the phone of DIG Vivek Singh was recently snatched away by two motorcycle-borne thieves in Guwahati.
Speaking about the police action so far, Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah said that police have arrested one Rezaul Islam from South Salmara, who used to buy most of the stolen phones from the thieves in Guwahati.
“Today, both Rezaul and Abhijit Rabha tried to escape from the clutches of the police, and then the police fired upon them, injuring them in the process. Both of them are currently undergoing treatment at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital,” Diganta Barah added.
The review meeting was attended by Chief Ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura.
