PM Modi launches ‘Mahabahu-Brahmaputra’ initiative, other key development projects in Assam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Mahabahu-Brahmaputra’ initiative and multiple development projects and via video conferencing on Thursday. He also laid the foundation stone of the nation’s longest river bridge between Dhubri-Phulbari in Assam and performed Bhoomi Poojan for construction of Majuli bridge.
Addressing the gathering virtually, the Prime minister said that it is a historic day for the people of Majuli as well as for the Northeast. He said that connectivity was a big challenge for the North East, but rapid progress has been made in this direction of late.
PM Modi said that his government has prioritised Assam’s development and efforts are being made day and night to fulfill this. The Mahabahu-Brahmaputra program will strengthen water connectivity across the region through the waters of the Brahmaputra.
The launch of Mahabahu-Brahmaputra, which aims to improve connectivity in the eastern states, was marked by the inauguration of the Ro-Pax vessel operations between Neamati-Majuli Island, North Guwahati-South Guwahati and Dhubri-Hatsingimari.
Foundation stone for construction of Inland Water Transport Terminal at Jogighopa and various tourist jetties on Brahmaputra and launch of digital solutions for Ease-of-Doing-Business is also part of the initiative.
The initiative is marked by the launch of two e-portals, Car-D (Cargo Data) app for information on cargo traffic and cruise data in real-time, while PANI (Portal for Asset & Navigation Information) app is for detailed information on various features of national waterways.
The programme is aimed at providing seamless connectivity to the eastern parts of India and includes various development activities for the people living around river Brahmaputra and River Barak.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal lauded the initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the development of the region. Sonowal said that it was a great day for the people of Majuli.
“A memorable day for Majuli. I thank PM Shri @narendramodi ji for fulfilling the dream of the people of Bhaktipeeth Majuli. The bridge will act as a catalyst for massive development and progress for the #NorthEast,” Sonowal tweeted.
