PM Modi Highlights Immense Potential And Food Value of Northeast’s Black Rice

PM Modi said that India was eager to share its experiences and innovations with the global community.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that black rice from Assam, Manipur, and Meghalaya has recently emerged as a superfood in the country due to its medicinal value.
PM Modi highlighted the medicinal value of black rice while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the 32nd International Association of Agricultural Economists at the National Agricultural Science Centre (NASC) Complex in Delhi.
Modi said, “Black rice has recently emerged as a superfood in India, particularly favoured for its medicinal value. Black rice from Manipur, Assam, and Meghalaya is gaining popularity for its health benefits.”
He further added that India was eager to share its experiences and innovations with the global community.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked PM Modi for highlighting the immense potential and food value of Assam’s black rice.
Taking to Twitter, CM Sarma wrote, “Thank you Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji for highlighting the immense potential and food value of Assam’s black rice. Grown in abundance in the North East, black rice is known for its medicinal properties and is also empowering our farmers due to its rich value.”

In 2020, Manipur black rice, popularly known as ‘Chakhao’ (Chak – rice; Hao-delicious) by the locals, has bagged the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Chakhao, scented glutinous rice which has been in cultivation in Manipur over centuries, is characterised by its special aroma.
