He maintained that the SIFF's actions are purely driven by local concerns, and the accusations of foreign involvement are baseless.

A day after Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu criticized anti-dam groups for opposing the 11,000 MW Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project, the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF), which is leading the protests has hit back at the Chief Minister terming him “immature”.

Speaking to Northeast Live over the phone from Siang, SIFF President Gegong Jijong said, “The CM is talking about the Legal Advisor we have, I want to point out that he is a local but his father is settled in Dibang Valley which is why they are talking about the foreign funding. Our Legal Advisor can be taken from any place so they don’t have the right to talk about this. He might be Chief Minister but he is immature. “

“Nobody will fund us except our well-wishers, nobody from Pakistan or China is funding us. And if they call us to talk, I will talk but CM Khandu needs to come to me,” Jijong added.

He maintained that the SIFF’s actions are purely driven by local concerns, and the accusations of foreign involvement are baseless. The standoff between the government and protestors continues to escalate.

It needs to be mentioned that the state government has requisitioned the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) to conduct pre-feasibility reports for the SUMP and deploy them in the Siang district.

The project, which is set to be developed by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), has faced intense resistance from local communities, especially the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF). The SIFF has organized rallies across the region, voicing concerns that the mega dam will submerge several villages, disrupt local livelihoods, and severely impact the ecology of the Siang River.
