Peace rally by Manipur University students in Imphal West; police fire tear gas shells

Worried over the prevailing law and order situation, students of Manipur University took to the streets in Imphal West this afternoon, demanding that peace be restored in the violence affected state at the earliest.
At least 500 students of the University took part in a peace rally from the campus till Singjamei.
But the situation escalated when police tried to stop the students from proceeding at Kakwa.
As per inputs, police resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse the peaceful protestors, but the agitating students confronted the police.
Following the police action, the rally scattered for a while. However, the students were steadfast in support of their demand and regrouped to carry on with their rally till Singjamei Bazar before returning to the Manipur University campus.
Apart from restoration of peace, the core demands of the students included restoration of internet connectivity and right to education.
