A total of 9190 students belonging to Myanmar and Bangladesh refugees as well as kids displaced from Manipur due to the ongoing ethnic violence are currently being imparted education by the Mizoram government, said State School Education Minister Lalchhandama Ralte today.

Addressing a press conference in Aizawl, Ralte said that 6,366 refugee students from Myanmar, 250 refugee students from Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh and 2574 internally displaced students who are taking shelter in the state have resumed their education.

The Minister said that the students have also been provided with free school uniforms and textbooks. They are also provided with mid-day meals.

Refugee students from Myanmar came out with flying colours in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations conducted by the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) last year.

Of 31 students appearing in the examinations, 28 students passed the examination and the pass percentage among the refugee students was 90.32%.

“As a high majority of refugee students lost their documents they were given exemption in producing documents pertaining to their qualifications and the acknowledgements obtained from their respective village councils and civil society leaders were accepted,” Ralte said.

He also said that enrolment in government schools have gone up steadily during the last 4 years which is a positive indication that the education in government schools have witnessed improvement.
