Over 6000 MT of illegal coal seized in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills

During the operation, a large quantity of coal was found dumped outside the officially inventorised coordinates.
At least 6000 metric tons of illegally mined coal was seized in East Jaintia Hills District on Saturday.
Acting on the directives of the High Court of Meghalaya and the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR), a joint enforcement team comprising an Executive Magistrate from East Jaintia Hills District, officials from the Police Department, and the DMR conducted a coordinated raid in the district.
During the operation, a large quantity of coal was found dumped outside the officially inventorised coordinates.
The seized coal was immediately transported to a Coal India-authorised depot for safe custody.
As per the assessment report dated May 9, from the Divisional Mining Officer, a total quantity of approximately 6000 MT of coal has been seized.
FIR has been registered under provisions of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act (MMDR) and further investigation is underway.
The action was confirmed by the office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District.
