The fresh influx of refugees from the military coup hit Myanmar has crossed the 1,500 mark. As per government data, a total of 1,546 Myanmar nationals have entered Mizoram between Friday and Monday.
As per local police and district officials, the fresh immigrants including women and children are taking shelter in 15 to 16 villages in three districts of the state, namely, Champhai, Lawngtlai and Hnahthial districts bordering Myanmar. They reportedly crossed the Tiau River through a small country boat.
Out of the total number, 278 refugees had come into Champhai district, 1,268 refugees had entered Hnahthial district, and 720 refugees are taking shelter in Thingsai.
Meanwhile, in Hnahthial, the Young Mizo Association or YMA and other civil society groups are extending helping hand to the refugees on humanitarian grounds.
They are being accommodated by village councils in 6-7 villages. Most of the refugees from Myanmar have been provided makeshift shelters.
It needs to be mentioned here that taking cognizance of the surge in daily COVID-19 cases in the state, the authorities concerned were strictly screening the new refugees.
According to the state’s Home Department, clearance from the medical team is mandatory for Myanmar nationals to enter into Mizoram.
