Over 1,000 Tourists Still Stranded in North Sikkim After Heavy Rainfall Triggers Landslides

North Sikkim Tourists Stranded: 1,000 tourists have been evacuated so far, more than 1,000 remain stranded.
Heavy rainfall triggered multiple landslides in North Sikkim yesterday, leaving around 2,000 tourists stranded as key roads were severely damaged. While approximately 1,000 tourists have been evacuated so far, more than 1,000 remain stranded in areas like Lachen, Lachung, and Chungthang.
Rescue teams worked through the night, evacuating around 500 tourists to safer locations, including the Gurudwara in Chungthang and nearby hotels. Local authorities report that nearly 500 tourists are currently taking shelter at the Gurudwara.
Efforts to evacuate the remaining stranded individuals are ongoing, though road blockages and adverse weather conditions have significantly slowed operations. With weather conditions slightly improving today, authorities are hopeful that more tourists can be safely evacuated.
District administration teams, along with the army and local police, are coordinating the rescue operations and working to restore road connectivity to ensure the safety of all those affected.
It needs to be mentioned that earlier yesterday, a tourist vehicle was reportedly buried by a landslide in Sipgyer, though no casualties were reported. Meanwhile, the Pidhang to Sanklang route remains temporarily closed due to debris and flooding.
