One person was killed in an encounter with police in West Garo Hills headquarters Tura on Tuesday evening. The encounter took place when the deceased, who was on a bike, opened fire at cops after he was directed to stop.

The West Garo Hills police revealed that prior to the encounter they received credible information regarding suspicious movement of unidentified persons with sophisticated weapons in and around Daldagre area.

Accordingly, a counter-insurgency operation was immediately launched and multiple Nakas were put to apprehend the miscreants.

As per the police statement, at around 7:30 pm yesterday, a Police team at one of the Nakas noticed a bike rider approaching. On seeing the police team, the rider allegedly jumped off the bike and also opened fire.

However, the assailant sustained bullet injuries during the encounter and succumbed to the injuries.

Meanwhile, while confirming the incident, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said investigation is underway to ascertain the identity of the slain individual. It is yet to be ascertained if the deceased has links with any group.
